Vitanmin D May Slow Breast Cancer

Oct. 17, 2006 -- Vitamin D may slow the progression of breast cancer, according to a small new study.

A recent study done by British researchers found that women in early-stage breast cancer had much higher levels of vitamin D in their blood than women with more advanced disease. It has also been shown that vitamin D levels are lower in women with breast cancer in comparison to healthy women. These results suggest that vitamin D may play a role in promoting the progression of breast cancer.

Can the Sun Help Prevent Ovarian Cancer?

A new study suggests that modest sun exposure and vitamin D could lower the risk of ovarian cancer in women. The study, which appeared in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, finds that women in sunnier regions of the world have a significantly lower risk of ovarian cancer than those who dwell in colder climates.

A growing number of studies have now linked vitamin D intake to a decreased risk of cancer. 'It's particularly important to find ways to lower ovarian-cancer risk, because there is no good way to detect it early,' said lead study author Dr. Cedric F. Garland of the University of California .
