'Recent studies show that adhering to a Mediterranean diet appears to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease,' says medical correspondent Dr. Emily Senay, citing several studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. 'Those who moderately adhered to the diet had a 53 percent reduction in risk of developing Alzheimer's disease,' said Dr. Senay. 'Those who most closely adhered to the Mediterranean diet had a 68% reduction in the risk of Alzheimer's.' The Mediterranean diet tends to be higher in fruits, vegetables, fish, legumes, nuts, bread, pasta, cereals, potatoes, and unsaturated fats, combined with a moderate consumption of red wine and a limited amount of saturated fats.'
